Ross: GOP immigration plan sounds a lot like what Democrats have wanted all along

What to do about the thousands of children from Central America now in U.S. custody at the Southern border?
A group of Republicans led by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy went to the border to see the crisis for themselves. McCarthy said he was moved, as a father, at the sight of so many children, and not just from Central America, but from Haiti, Sri Lanka, even Iran.
“Why were they coming now?” he asked. “They were being released into the country.”
He seemed moved by what he saw.
“You look in the eyes of these children, … no adults in sight.”
He blamed it on Biden for reversing Trump’s border policies, one of which was to treat illegal border-crossers as criminals to be removed immediately and separated from their children.
And yet, when McCarthy was asked yesterday what he would do, he didn’t suggest anything like that – he said let’s fix the system.
“The right way is to have a system that can work … to keep families together,” he recommended.
So, he’s saying people who want to come here shouldn’t have to wait forever; that if immigrants get an education here they should be encouraged to stay here; and that families should be allowed to immigrate together … although, are you really sure about that last part, Congressman?
“I don’t think we should put the married brothers … ability to come.”
So a few conditions, but still – that sounds pretty close to what Democrats have been calling for: cut the waiting period, welcome the Dreamers, keep families together. I say hold a vote and get it done, before someone makes it a political issue!
