Ross: How we can peek into the National Enquirer’s secret safe

The news story reads simply.

Dateline WASHINGTON, Associated Press:  “The National Enquirer kept a safe containing documents on hush money payments and other damaging stories it killed as part of its cozy relationship with Donald Trump … the safe was a great source of power for David Pecker, the company’s CEO.”

If this report is true, I can see why the president keeps calling the Russia investigation a witch hunt. Because it implies that the real puppet master isn’t Vladimir Putin, but David Pecker at the National Enquirer.

Fortunately for the president, Mr. Pecker is a friend … so far anyway.

But it is an interesting business model. A media company that pays for news stories and then kills them. It’s like the way we used to pay farmers not to grow crops. And it makes sense because we have way too much news these days. We need a breather.

That’s why I have a proposal. Here it is: Trump releases all his tax returns; Geraldo opens the Enquirer’s safe and reveals the contents live on Fox, and in exchange – Mueller agrees not to prosecute.

Because all we want to know is whether Trump is being secretly manipulated.

And if he is, we don’t need an impeachment or an indictment. We just need an election.
