The evolution gap

Congressman Paul Broun represents Georgia’s 10th Congressional district. He’s a member of the Tea Party. And a little over a year ago at a Sportsman’s banquet at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Georgia, he announced his conclusion that evolution is a lie.

“I’ve come to understand that all that stuff I was taught about evolution, big bang theory, all that is lies from the pit of hell,” said Broun.

And keep in mind – he’s trained as a physician.

“You see there are a lot of scientific data that this is really a young earth.”

A young earth created in six 24 hour days as we know them. End of story.

And I play this clip because while a majority of Americans – 60 percent – believe that human beings have evolved over time, and while among Democrats, evolution believers constitute 67 percent, among Republicans, the number believing in evolution has been dropping and is now down to 43 percent.

And I know some of you are tempted to say, this must be linked to a lack of education – but the statistics say it’s not, and as I mentioned, Congressman Broun is a medical school graduate, now serving on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

Bill Nye the Science Guy recently issued a viral video with an appeal to creationists.

“I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world that is completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe that is fine, but don’t make your kids do it, because we need them. We need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems,” says Nye.

And he’s accepted a challenge to go to Kentucky next month and debate Creationist and Biblical Scholar Ken Ham, founder the the Creation Museum.

“We’re losing the next generation from the church,” says Ham. “Why? I suggest to you because God’s people are not taking the stand they should from God’s word.”

Bill has his work cut out, because Ham has done this many times, and has answer for every question – including – how, if you believe that the earth is 6000 years old, do you explain the fossils of humans and dinosaurs and sea life.

“Most of your fossils are the result of the flood. The graveyard of the flood crying out to us that God has judged sin. He’s judged sin with death. He’s judged the wickedness of men, but he provided an arc of salvation. Noah’s Arc is a picture of Jesus,” says Ham.

I’ve seen Ham in action, and I predict that Nye will get nowhere. And Ham does not deny that science works, that it can treat disease and send rockets to the moon, but he says, so what? The earth was still created in six days. God created an ideal world where we were all vegetarians, including the animals, and free of disease, but that after original sin, everything changed.

So it looks to me like evolutionists are just going to have to accept that non-evolutionists exist, and their minds are not going to be changed easily, and they have a strong influence on the Republican Party.

Although I bet there’s one form of evolution they believe in: that Democrats – with a little push from Obamacare – might evolve into Republicans.
