Listen to Dave Ross Commentary: We have finally run out of words
Every year, Michigan’s Lake Superior State University bravely tries to rescue English by announcing a list of banished words — words that are so overused they should never be used again.
The problem is…that it doesn’t work.
For example, on the 2012 list they finally banned Amazing – but come on
You can’t stop stuff like this!
Beyonce’s pregnancy drove them to ban Baby bump. But seriously. It’s an Amazing Baby Bump. There’s just no other way to say it.
They also want to ban Infrastructure, Bonding, Cutting Edge, Surreal, Facebook used as a verb — but it will be an Epic Fail. Also banned. Because the problem is LANGUAGE ITSELF. There are simply too few words for the amount of communicating we do now. People don’t just communicate 24/7, they communicate 24/7 on multiple devices simultaneously.
SO of COURSE words are going to be beaten to death. How can you NOT overuse them? With all that time to fill, you have to repeat yourself.
Facebooking has made every one of us a cable channel. We have to recycle.
In fact it’s to the point where we will have to ban the banning of overused words.
Because overused words are the infrastructure of today’s cutting edge hi tech bonding. It’s Surreal, I know. I just blew your mind, didn’t I?
