Listen to Dave Ross Commentary: Welcome to Jerry’s World
All of us have done or said something that seemed normal to us, only to discover that everyone else came away with a completely different impression.
I’m reminded of the mocking e-mails I got when I admitted how much I enjoyed Mamma Mia. We can’t always see ourselves as others see us.
“I have horsed around with kids. I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact,” said Jerry Sandusky on the phone to NBC’s Rock Center, explaining that in Jerry’s world, there is nothing sexual about soaping up with kids.
And as for being accused of child rape:
“OK, we were showering and he actually turned all the showers on and was sliding across the floor, and we were possibly like snapping a towel, horseplay,” said Sandusky.
Horseplay! This is how misunderstandings happen — people hear about a naked man hugging a naked boy and they immediately think SEX! But Jerry Sandusky comes from a world where naked soapy man-boy horseplay is good clean fun. Literally! In Jerry’s world, a man who loves young people…
“I love to be around them.”
… sees no reason why that shouldn’t include a hug in the shower. In Jerry’s world, a mom would understand that a naked shower hug is like the post-touchdown fanny-smack we see all the time. That is Jerry’s world. And now you see the problem: how do you prosecute a visitor from another planet?
