Why aren’t universities already being open about student debt?

Mar 24, 2017, 11:07 AM

It’s curious that colleges and universities wouldn’t already be keeping students up to date on how much debt they are accruing.

Ross: Does this politician even know who he’s dealing with?

KIRO Radio’s Dave Ross asked Sen. Barbara Bailey if some schools are worried that if students realized how much debt they had even before graduating if they would take fewer classes and thus spend less.

“I think that sometimes they’re busy, they’re doing other things,” Bailey said.

So she doesn’t necessarily blame the colleges for not helping students understand just how much debt they will graduate with. But she does want to help.

Bailey proposed Senate Bill 5022, which would require higher-education institutions to provide simple and concise information about the cost of borrowing when financial awards include loans.

“Just want families and students to have some concept when they’re taking out student loans that it’s not free money,” Bailey told Dave. “It’s a loan they are going to have to pay back.”
