Jake and Spike: Tim Eyman feels initiative process is under fire

Tim Eyman, a prominent figure in Washington State’s initiative process, voiced strong opposition to Senate Bill 5382, which critics have dubbed the “initiative killer.” The bill, currently under consideration, proposes stringent requirements for petition signatures, including the necessity for signatories to provide their addresses.
In an interview on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio Eyman expressed concerns that the bill would undermine the initiative process for both conservative and liberal causes.
“It’s not just taking it away from people that agree with me,” Eyman stated. “It’s taking it away from people who want to sponsor and vote for liberal initiatives as well.”
The bill’s proponents argue the new requirements are necessary to ensure the integrity of the initiative process. However, Eyman and other critics, including Secretary of State Steve Hobbs, a Democrat, and his predecessor Sam Reed, a Republican, believe the bill is a solution in search of a problem. Hobbs pointed out that in the last 25 years, there have been 25 million signatures submitted for 77 ballot measures, with no invalid signatures being counted.

‘Initiative killer’ would have a negative impact on military personnel
Eyman highlighted the potential negative impact on military personnel and others who may only have a PO Box, arguing their valid signatures could be unfairly disqualified. He also raised concerns about the criminal penalties for signature gatherers, which could include up to 364 days in jail and a $5,000 fine for failing to verify the validity of each signature.
The debate over SB 5382 continues, with both sides passionately defending their positions. As the bill moves through the legislative process, its implications for Washington State’s initiative remain contentious.
