The situation at The Evergreen State College casts even more doubt on the future finances of this struggling college.
I recently reported that the school’s finances are shrinking thanks, in large part, to dwindling enrollment in the wake of how administrators handled the hostage-situation during the ‘Day of Absence’ controversy.
It was so bad that college president George S. Bridges had to seek counseling, though he’s still too scared to blame the students who wouldn’t let him use a restroom without student escort.
Now, we learn, the school is stalling plans to build a new student housing project that was slated to begin. Why? They can no longer afford the $42 million project. According to the Olympian, both Bridges and the school’s bonding company recommended delaying the project.
“Our bonding company also recommended the deferment because there is a chance that college revenue, which is tied to enrollment, might be insufficient to cover a new bond payment this coming year,” college spokesperson Zach Powers told the Olympian.
A chance? This seems like a certainty. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jennifer Drake warned staffers: “We are running down our financial reserves.” This all comes after a decision by the board to dip into the emergency fund.
