Curley: Nobody comes into this world hating one person or another

KIRO Radio’s John Curley has two major takeaways about Omar Mateen, the man who killed 49 people in a mass shooting in Orlando on Sunday: denying Mateen’s religious beliefs is a bad political move and that the man wasn’t born hating homosexuals.

“All hate is learned,” Curley said Monday. “Nobody comes into this world hating one person or another. Your parents teach you how to hate, your parents teach you bias and prejudice and that’s what you carry with you.”

The slain shooter’s father, Seddique Mateen, says his son was well-educated and respectful, and that he was “not aware what motivated him” in the shooting. However, Seddique Mateen holds a pro-Taliban program on a California-based satellite Afghan TV station and believes that “God will punish those involved in homosexuality” and that it is “not an issue that humans should deal with.”

Co-host Tom Tangney said that there is clearly something wrong if the father couldn’t understand how spewing anti-homosexuality rhetoric could propel his son to that hate.

“There’s clearly a connection,” Tangney said.

While Curley and Tangney put a major emphasis on the teachings of his father, they also believe culture at-large comes into play. But how that culture is described is a point of contention.

Curley says that President Barack Obama’s unwillingness to say the words “radical Islam” are a disaster for Democrats.

“Every time he doesn’t mention Islam, you get another person to vote for Donald Trump,” Curley said “Anytime he doesn’t mention Islam or Islamic terrorism or tie it into religion – because he describes it as ‘We don’t know, it’s just some sort of thing that is just radicalizing. It’s all homegrown.’ No, it’s not, there is no such thing as homegrown. It’s coming from the Middle East.”

Curley used the analogy of a factory spewing poison into the water and people a mile away getting sick. Thus, people should follow the trail.

“They follow the trail all the way to the factory,” he said. “Oh, there’s a pipe and look at the garbage coming out of the pipe. So you shut the factory down that shuts the pipe down that stops the poison in the water that stops poisoning people down the stream. You’ve got to go get people in the Middle East. You’ve got to crush ISIS in order to stop this. It’s not homegrown.”

But Tangney says an ideology can’t be crushed in that way.

“We need Muslim nations to fight ISIS,” Tangney said. “So somehow throwing the entire Muslim faith into the same bracket as what ISIS is doing, it doesn’t help the Muslim nations fight ISIS. The idea is you don’t alienate them. … We started wiping out Al-Qaeda and what happened? Up sprouted ISIS. You can’t kill an ideology unless you want to declare WWIII and actually send in hundreds of thousands of troops there. They want a crusade. They want a holy war between the Christians or the Western World and the Muslim world. And Barack Obama refuses to give them that.”
