KIRO Radio's John Curley doesn't wait for professional firework displays. Instead, he goes out to nearby areas and blows off fireworks in residential areas.

If the Fourth of July is used as a teaching moment for your family, you probably can’t wait to drop some dough at firework stands.

Despite a growing number of communities in Western Washington banning fireworks, there will be plenty of stands opening up in the next few days — for those that haven’t driven out to a reservation already.

KIRO Radio’s John Curley is one of those parents who can’t wait to celebrate freedom by lighting off small explosives. But he lives in Sammamish, where the sale and use of fireworks are banned. So the radio host and his family hop into the Curley mobile and drive over to neighboring communities to light off their fireworks.

“My wife is like, ‘What are you teaching the kids?'” Curley explained. “I’m teaching independence.”

Curley is quick to note that people who justify celebrating July 4 because it’s Independence Day are way behind the times. Everybody knows it’s all about the fireworks.

“Independence Day? Still working that angle?” Curley asked.
