‘I’m so proud of you, buddy’: Jake chokes up watching his son’s school honor 9/11

KIRO host Jake Skorheim has been thinking about how to teach his kids about 9/11. On Thursday morning, his son’s sixth-grade class did it for him.

“His science teacher took him out, his sixth-grade class, and they put 2,977 flags on the school grounds,” Jake said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio.

For Jake, it wasn’t just a class project.

“Just think about all these sixth graders who were born 15 years after the fact, putting these flags in the ground, and now having a connection to this, and understanding, and the solemn respect that they have for it,” he said.

Jake said he shared a moment with his son when he saw the flags with his own eyes.

“You’re seeing all these flags, and I’m thinking about these sixth graders putting these flags down there, and then you come around the corner, and there’s this hill next to this flower bed, and it’s just flags,” he said.

Jake told his son, “I’m so proud of you, buddy, for doing this.”

‘We shouldn’t forget them’

KIRO host Spike O’Neill agreed that keeping the memory alive matters, especially for a generation that never experienced the day firsthand.

“It’s important that we do remember,” he said. “It’s healthy to remember them.”

“We shouldn’t forget them,” Jake added. “So we won’t.”
