‘It’s not good branding, it’s great’: Gee, Luke break down the PR strategy behind Trump’s $5K dividend promise

Sep 11, 2026, 6:48 AM

President Donald Trump promised a $5,000 payment to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans keep control of both the House and Senate in November’s midterm elections, calling it the “Trump dividend.”

The proposal could cost more than $1 trillion, and Trump did not explain how it would be funded. He has previously floated similar direct payment ideas, including $2,000 tariff dividends and a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) dividend, neither of which materialized.

Gee Scott, co-host on “The Gee and Ursula Show” on KIRO Newsradio, brought in KIRO Newsradio reporter Luke Duecy, a former corporate public relations executive, to break down the messaging strategy.

“Is Trump dividend good branding?” Gee asked. “Because it actually sounds like people are getting something already owed.”

“It’s not good branding, it’s great branding,” Duecy replied. “It’s a powerful message because it’s streamlined and it’s easy to understand. Republicans win, you get $5,000. Much easier to understand than talking about tax policy, gross domestic product, tariffs, federal spending.”

Duecy said the word “dividend” was almost certainly chosen deliberately.

“In the world of PR, every word matters,” Duecy said. “A dividend sounds like something that you already own. It’s yours. You earned it. It’s not a government handout. It’s your money, and it’s all because I, Trump, made America’s economy great.”

He added that the $5,000 figure works because people can picture it.

“It’s a car payment. It’s an insurance payment. It’s vacation. It’s rent. It’s groceries,” Duecy said. “None of us can really visualize the total, which is more than $1 trillion. What’s a trillion?”

“A billion seconds ago was 1994,” Gee said. “That’s all I got. Anything after, don’t ask me.”

Duecy says the biggest risk is credibility

Duecy said the PR case against the proposal comes down to trust.

“You risk credibility, and you risk trust,” Duecy said. “Trump has previously floated other direct payment ideas, like $2,000 tariff dividends and the DOGE dividend. Those never happened. So the more those don’t happen, the more you risk some people no longer believe in you or your platform.”

He said the biggest problem is the promise itself becoming the story.

“The promise itself, Republicans win, you get $5,000, could become the story,” Duecy said. “Where is the trillion dollars coming from?”

Gee asked whether the administration could structure messaging around a proposal they know won’t happen, just to win the midterms.

“Is that a possibility where they know this is not going to happen, but the result for the PR is to win?” Gee asked.

Duecy said that’s the central question.

“You’ve got to start asking yourself: Is this a policy announcement that happens to have political benefits, or is this more like a political stunt packaged as an economic policy?” Duecy said. “That’s the question smart consumers will be asking. Not everyone will.”
