The HBO made-for-TV-movie Game Change will invades homes across America this weekend, with a whole lot of Sarah Palin. Tom Tangney wishes the very true-to-life story could have benefited from Julianne Moore taking more liberty with the film’s main character, Sarah Palin.
The real Sarah Palin isn’t fan of the book that inspired the HBO film, but filmmakers definitely places a larger emphasis on Palin, as well as campaign manager Steve Schmidt in the film.
It’s recent history, and spoiler alert – Barack Obama wins the election. The story really picks up where John McCain brings Sarah Palin on board; she is the real game changer (hence the name) for his campaign. Ed Harris as McCain sounds so hopeful when he introduced Palin for the first time to a crowd, but that quickly changes, when she started speaking publicly on behalf of the campaign.
“[Sarah Palin] ends up becoming her own woman,” critic Tom Tangney told 97.3 KIRO FM’s Ross & Burbank Show. By the end of the film, says Tangney, we see the major conflict between Palin and Schmidt.
The movie will be fun, entertaining and a guilty pleasure according to Tangney. It won’t matter what your political affiliation, you’ll be routing for Palin by the end.
While Moore portrays Palin with more depth than Tina Fey’s infamous Saturday Night Live impersonation, Tangney thinks the film was too accurate.
“Because of that you don’t really get the internal motivations,” Tangney says. “Julianne Moore could have really done something more.”
