Jordan breaks down Seattle's economy using a forest analogy that sticks. The big companies are the old growth trees — Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing. But the undergrowth (mid-sized businesses) and the underbrush (small businesses) are disappearing. And when one part of that ecosystem collapses, everything follows. That's exactly what happened to Detroit with the auto industry and Pittsburgh with steel.
