Maritza Rivera's $418K Plan to Stop Gun Violence
Seattle City Councilmember Maritza Rivera joined The Gee and Ursula Show and didn't walk back a single word.
She stood by her criticism of Mayor Katie Wilson's decision to force Chief Shon Barnes to resign — calling it impulsive and reckless. She defended Barnes' record on community policing and officer accountability. And she made clear the council was never given information to back up the rumors swirling before he was pushed out. But that wasn't even the main reason she came on the show.
Rivera is pushing for $418,000 in the city budget to bring the National Network for Safe Communities to Seattle for a two-year focused deterrence strategy — a proven approach that brings police, prosecutors, service providers, and community members together to identify the small number of people driving gun violence and deliver a direct message: stop, accept services, or face swift consequences.
