Should an Appointed Board Override Your Vote for Sheriff?
Should an appointed commission have the power to remove an elected sheriff — even if voters chose that person? That's the debate at the heart of a new Washington law, and Mason County Sheriff Ryan Spurling joined The Gee and Ursula Show to make the case that it goes too far.
A judge just blocked key portions of the law, which gave the state's Criminal Justice Training Commission the ability to decertify sheriffs — including over speech deemed discriminatory. Spurling says this isn't about opposing accountability. It's about protecting voters' authority and an elected official's free speech.
