An audit reveals Sound Transit wasted more than $318,000 in security costs.

The findings from the Washington State Auditor conclude that the transit agency overpaid private contractors and police agencies, including the King County Sheriff, that provide security for the bus, light rail and train system.

The auditor also cited payment of unauthorized overtime and other inadequately supported costs.

The audit summary concludes “Sound Transit lacks adequate internal controls to ensure it properly monitors its security and police contract, resulting in late fees of $126,147 and unallowable costs of $191,525 over a 4-1/2 year period.”

Sound Transit claims it has fixed the problems but also promises to implement changes recommended by the auditor. Sound Transit thinks it can collect more than half of the overpayments.
