Boeing warns airlines of issues with 737 NG engines

Feb 14, 2013, 2:27 PM | Updated: 2:35 pm

Boeing has warned airlines up and down the West Coast to watch for surging engines on its popular 737 NG.

The Seattle Times reports Boeing alerted customers flying the 737 Next Generation that there have been some engine issues on takeoff with the plane.

They amount to sudden surges or what Boeing calls “uncommanded engine oscillations.” The instability usually goes away quickly, but in at least two cases both engines were affected on takeoff.

The Seattle Times reports a likely cause is contaminated fuel because the cases have only happened on the West Coast, but other sources are being investigated.

This has happened 32 times in the last five years, but to put that in perspective there have been 23 million flights with this plane during that time.
