Seattle’s Central District community is celebrating this week after several victories by the CD Panthers over the weekend.
Omari Salisbury of Converge Media tells KIRO Radio’s Hanna Scott that two football teams — the 7U and 11U — won their championship games. Also, the CD Panthers cheer team won their sixth straight championship. Three more youth football teams were in championship games.
Salisbury said the call went out after shootings in the neighborhood to help support the CD Panthers as some of the players were affected by the violence.
“Throughout the season, people have been showing up and showing up to practices,” he said. “This is one of these things where when something bad happens and there’s a positive outcome. It doesn’t always happen here for us and our community, but this is definitely an example of it where our community came together and rallied around these young people and created a sense of safety and a sense of community.”
Salisbury added that the CD Panthers are a good example of ground-level prevention where young players are learning responsibility, teamwork, accountability, and hard work.
