Construction to snarl weekend traffic on I-5 in south Seattle

Getting into Seattle from the south this weekend could be tough, as a construction closure is expected to snarl traffic on I-5 north.
The Washington State Department of Transportation is again closing three of five lanes near Spokane Street to replace aging expansion joints.
The closure will begin Friday night around 8 p.m. with the work ending before 5 a.m. Monday.
“Monday morning drivers should have no problem,” said WSDOT spokesman Bart Treece. But drivers will want to take alternate routes throughout the weekend from the south or get stuck in long back ups, he said.
It’s an inconvenience, but a necessary one. “These things are like 50 years old, they’ve take a beating from traffic and it’s a real safety issue for us. We need to get these things out before they pop up and cause a problem with traffic,” Treece said.
