Convicted cop killer Christopher Monfort likely died from a drug overdose while serving a life sentence in prison.
In January, Monfort was found dead in his cell.
Now, the Walla Walla County Medical Examiner is saying he likely died from an overdose of his nerve pain medication.
According to The Seattle Times, investigators are trying to determine whether his death was accidental or planned.
Jeremy Barclay, a Department of Corrections spokesman, said Monfort was found in his single-person cell at 7:45 a.m. Prison staff began CPR but Monfort was pronounced dead by medics. Barclay said there was nothing suspicious in Monfort’s cell and there were no indications of self-harm.
Monfort was paralyzed during a shootout with Seattle police in 2009. He killed officer Timothy Brenton.
A jury voted unanimously to send Monfort to prison for life, without the possibility of parole, in 2015. Jurors rejected an insanity defense.
Monfort was found not guilty of one count of attempted murder. He was found guilty on charges of arson, premeditated murder, murder in the first degree and two charges of attempted murder.
