Policing from above: Everett launches drones with first responders

The Everett Police Department is launching a two-year drone pilot program in partnership with Flock Safety to help address staffing shortages.

Beginning in June, two drones—one assigned to north Everett and one to the south—will respond to 911 calls and provide officers with real-time video before they arrive on scene, according to the Everett Herald.

Drones may cut response times in half

The media outlet added that, while current police response times average just over four minutes, drones could arrive in as little as 90 seconds.

Officials stress that drones won’t replace officers but will serve as a “force multiplier.” The pilot program will be funded through grants and will rely on community support beyond the initial trial.

Police said the drones wouldn’t be used for surveillance, immigration enforcement, or monitoring protests. They are not equipped with facial recognition, microphones, or speakers.

The city council approved the program in a 5-1 vote. In response, the department will maintain a public dashboard with flight data and incident information.

If the program is continued, each drone could cost up to $300,000 annually.
