‘A significant movement is underway’: JBLM flights raise questions about U.S. troop deployments to Middle East

Mar 24, 2026, 2:05 PM | Updated: 2:59 pm

“A significant movement is underway,” according to open-source analysts tracking U.S. military aircraft, as flights from Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) fuel new questions about a potential buildup of American forces in the Middle East tied to the escalating conflict with Iran.

The analysts, who specialize in monitoring publicly available flight data, reported dozens of Boeing C-17 Globemaster III missions occurred over the past two weeks, many originating from bases linked to rapid-deployment units. Some flights are believed to have landed in Israel and Jordan, with at least seven traced back to JBLM.

The same group previously identified fuel tanker positioning ahead of the initial U.S. airstrike campaign, lending weight to their latest observations. They said several recent flights appeared to mask or disable tracking systems mid-flight, making routes and destinations difficult to confirm.

One aircraft tracked on Tuesday departed from a National Guard base near Detroit, continued to Germany, and then disappeared from public tracking systems before reaching its apparent destination.

Separately, The Jerusalem Post reports U.S. deployments to the region are proceeding as planned, including roughly 2,500 Marines and 3,000 airborne troops.

Meanwhile, Fox News reported the command element of the 82nd Airborne Division, led by Major General Brandon Tegtmeier, has been ordered to deploy as the Pentagon considers sending additional ground forces. The New York Times has also reported that the division is under consideration for potential operations.

The Pentagon has not confirmed the reported flight activity or the scope of any troop movements.
