No lighting ceremonies for Leavenworth, but Village of Lights illuminates

Nov 28, 2020, 8:29 AM

The annual holiday events in Leavenworth are joining the list of festivities that have had to be altered this year due to the pandemic.

The lighting ceremonies that would usually spread holiday cheer on Thanksgiving evening, as well as every December weekend until Christmas, have all been postponed to 2021.

Holidays different in Westlake Park this year, but new activities emerge

But, the Bavarian-themed town is still having its Village of Lights, illuminating its storefronts with half a million brightly-colored bulbs in every color from now through Valentine’s Day.

Front Street, the main shopping street in Leavenworth that runs parallel to Highway 2, has closed for traffic to allow for more social distancing among pedestrians and extra space for outdoor dining. Picnic tables and restaurant seating can be seen up and down the street to encourage as much time spent outdoors as possible. Sanitizer and masks are available at stands throughout the town.

However, the traditional strolling carolers, musical performers in the gazebo, Glühwein tent, kids’ Cookie Crawl, and chestnut roasting will all have to wait until next year.

The town is discouraging crowding. If you want to see the lights, it is recommended that you visit Leavenworth during a less-busy time, such as mid-week.
