Demonstrators took to the streets on Saturday for the city’s annual May Day marches, with SPD reporting 14 total arrests.

Seattle Police Department details changes since George Floyd’s death

SPD made two arrests for spraypainting/property damage at a coffee shop near Broadway and Denny shortly before 2 p.m., and then another arrest near 7th and Olive for placing “hazards in roadways.”

A fourth arrest was made after someone threw a bottle through an open window into an SPD vehicle, hitting an officer.

Other arrests included obstruction, assault, and resisting arrest.

While SPD had stated that it hoped to have a reduced presence during Saturday’s marches, it did also note that it would still take action against anyone breaking the law.

Police reported that marchers threw bottles, rocks, and eggs, among other items.

Two major events were planned for Saturday: an “Essential and Excluded Workers” march and rally that started at noon at St. Mary’s Church at noon, and a separate march organized by the Seattle Youth Liberation Front (SYLF) at Seattle Central College that began at 2 p.m.

For the latter, the SYLF had encouraged supporters to participate in “decentralized, autonomous action.”
