Moses Lake boy accused of shooting parents over grounding

Mar 12, 2013, 2:02 PM | Updated: 3:58 pm

A Moses Lake boy upset that he’d been grounded is accused of shooting both his parents with what police call a “family weapon.”

“The gun is a .22 caliber revolver. It was in a gun cabinet of sorts,” says Police Captain Dave Sands.

Sands says all six rounds were fired and the boy was in the house when officers arrived. Both parents suffered gunshot wounds to the head but are expected to survive.

“Officers didn’t have any information regarding who the suspect was, however the information was developed quickly through the investigation that he was the person involved,” says Sands.

According to a police report, the boy told detectives he thought he would be able to do whatever he wanted if his parents were dead. Sands says the boy had been disciplined at school, so the parents punished him by taking away his electronics.

According to the Columbia Basin Herald quoting the police report, home surveillance shows the boy carrying a gun. A gun was found in the family swimming pool.

The boy is being held on $500,000 bail and the prosecutor is deciding if he wants to try to send the case to adult court. A hearing is scheduled for March 20.
