An Oak Harbor High School student was rushed to the hospital after they were hit by a car in a crosswalk and became trapped underneath the vehicle.

It happened Monday morning.

According to police, the student was crossing on a marked, well-lit pedestrian crosswalk equipped with active flashing pedestrian warning lights at the time.

The Oak Harbor Fire Department pulled the student to safety. They were taken by ambulance to Whidbey Health Medical Center in Coupeville for medical evaluation andtreatment. At last check, the student is stable. The Oak Harbor Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash and says there is no indication that the driver was impaired.

“The Oak Harbor Police Department reminds all motorists to slow down, remain alert, and exercise extra caution when traveling through school zones and areas with heavy pedestrian traffic,” the department shared. “During the morning hours, changing daylight conditions and increased student traffic make it especially important for drivers to remain attentive, obey posted speed limits, and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.”

The driver was issued a ticket.
