Mayor Jenny Durkan declared Jan. 18, 2019 to be Paul G. Allen Day on Friday, to commemorate his legacy and contributions to the city of Seattle.

“Paul was a true son of Seattle who made his city – and our world – a better, more vibrant place. For generations to come, people across our planet will benefit from his vision, innovation, and generosity,” Mayor Durkan said in a Tweet announcing the proclamation.

In terms of the significance of Jan. 18, Allen’s birthday is actually Jan. 21. This year, though, his birthday falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The move to make his commemorative day three days earlier presumably seems to be to avoid that overlap.

Allen passed away at 65 last October, due to complications from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Allen put over $2 billion toward a wide range of interests, including ocean health, homelessness, and scientific research.

His legacy in Seattle saw him co-found Microsoft, usher the Seahawks to their first ever Super Bowl win, and open the Museum of Pop Culture (originally known as the Experience Music Project), among many other accomplishments.
