5 injured after truck crashes into Pioneer Square Subway

A large truck crashed through the front wall of a Subway in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood Monday morning.

According to SPD, the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m., when a dump truck traveling westbound on James Street “suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure.” It then began rolling forward, hitting a pedestrian at 2nd Avenue and James.

The truck struck three vehicles in the 100 block of James Street while the driver fought to regain control, eventually stopping after crashing into the Subway on Yesler Street.

Photos from the scene provided by Twitter user @amateurlawprof show the surrounding area entirely cordoned off by emergency responders.

Seattle Fire reports that five people were involved in the collision. Four are in serious condition, and were transported to Harborview Medical Center.

The driver of the dump truck was initially held in SPD custody. He was later released.

One employee was inside the Subway at the time of the incident, and is said to have suffered minor injuries as well.

The building housing the Subway was evacuated due to “structural damage.”

SDOT that James and Yesler are both closed between 1st and 2nd Avenue. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes and expect delays.

SPD detectives on the scene expect the area to be remain closed “for the duration of the afternoon.”
