A magnitude-6.2 earthquake, followed by a magnitude-6.3 aftershock, rattled parts of Alaska and British Columbia Monday morning.
The first quake hit around 4:30 a.m., the next about two hours later.
The original quake was recorded roughly 120 miles southeast of Juneau, near the Alaska town of Mosquito Lake.
The USGS says it’s not completely uncommon for an aftershock to be larger than the triggering quake, though normally the following quakes are smaller.
The quakes were near the Denali Fault. However, preliminary data indicates the faults were not involved, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center.
Dozens of aftershocks have been reported since the morning quake.
