Starting Monday, Tacoma will no longer be picking up glass at homes and duplexes.

The Northwest’s recycling crisis is serious, but you can help

Preston Peck helps manage Tacoma’s recycling program and says that right now, glass recycling is more expensive than sending it to the landfill.

“We have estimated that this is going to save about a half a million dollars a year,” he told KIRO Radio.

According to data the city gathered, just a quarter of Tacoma’s recycling customers set out glass for pickup. That’s led to what Peck deems an “inefficient” and sometimes dangerous program, which has seen frequent injuries to workers.

How China’s ban on waste impacts Seattle recycling

People who will no longer get curbside service can take their glass one of four drop off locations and it will be recycled starting Jan. 4. Those locations are:

  • Central Co-op, 4502 N. Pearl St.
  • Center at Norpoint, 4818 Nassau Ave. NE
  • Stewart Heights Park, 5715 Reginald Gutierrez Lane

Glass put in trash cans will not be sorted for recycling.

Glass pickup will still be available for apartment, condo, and commercial buildings, but there is an additional charge that was put into place in Jan. 2020.
