Threats of teacher strikes continue across Washington

The potential for teacher strikes across Washington continues to grow as educators and school districts go head-to-head over funding, pay, and other benefits.

Over 100 school districts in Washington are negotiating with teachers over salaries. Some districts have agreed to give educators double-digit raises. Other teachers seek improved pay and are willing to walk out if needed.

• Teachers in Monroe voted to strike if educators are unable to reach an agreement. Their contract expires Friday night. Classes in Monroe are scheduled to start on Sept. 5.
• Arlington teachers won’t be in class on the first day of school if they don’t get a raise. Friday is the last chance to make a deal on a collective bargaining agreement with the school district. Teachers will strike starting Tuesday if no deal is made. The first day of school is Wednesday, Sept. 5.
• The first day of school in Tukwila has been canceled as teachers voted to authorize a strike. The first day of school is Wednesday, Sept. 5 which is the same day union and district officials are expected to meet next.
• Teachers in Puyallup voted to authorize a strike and have until next Tuesday to come to an agreement. Puyallup schools start next Wednesday.
• Tacoma teachers will vote whether to strike or not on Tuesday, Sept. 4 two days before school begins. The district has offered teachers a 3.1 percent pay raise. Teachers want more.
• Bethel School District teachers authorized a strike Thursday night. That strike will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4 if no agreement is made.
• Monroe teachers authorized a strike on Aug. 31. They will strike if a tentative agreement is not reached. Classes begin on Sept. 5.
