A state patrol trooper was injured Monday morning when a
suspected car thief ran over his foot while fleeing a
traffic stop.
The trooper pulled the man over for an HOV violation on I-
405 near Renton. As he approached the vehicle, the suspect
took off. Despite his injury, the trooper was able to fire
several shots at the suspect’s vehicle.
“Definitely a traffic stop that went very, very quickly
wrong,” said Washington State Patrol Trooper Julie Startup.
“At that point, the vehicle continued on, and took the exit
to 30th Street and actually crashed his vehicle.”
The suspect attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly
apprehended with assistance from the Renton Police
Department.
Both the suspect and the 30-year-old trooper were taken to a
nearby hospital with minor injures.
Startup said traffic on northbound I-405 through Renton will
be backed up as they conduct their investigation.
