Weekend I-90 closure could be tough for Mariners fans

The last closure on I-90 this spring is expected to cause traffic headaches for Mariners fans going to the Red Sox series this weekend.
“For fans that are coming up from I-5, give themselves a little extra time — even coming from south of Everett because there will be a ripple effect,” said Mariners spokesperson Rebecca Hale. “Take a little extra time to get to the ballpark.”
Starting at 11 p.m. Friday, Washington State Department of Transportation crews will reduce eastbound I-90 to one lane near Rainier Avenue South. All eastbound traffic will be rerouted to the express lanes until 5 a.m. Monday, May 18.
The closures will allow crews enough space to upgrade systems in the eastbound Mount Baker and Mercer Island tunnels. The work is necessary before Sound Transit begins its work in 2017 to devote the I-90 express lanes to the 14-mile light rail extension.
Drivers are urged to use alternate routes during the weekend closure.
“Like 599, Airport Way, 4th Avenue — during the last I-90 eastbound closure those routes were pretty open getting into downtown,” said WSDOT spokesperson Annie Johnson.
This is the last full directional closures on I-90 until October.
