A house explosion in Greenbank injured three firefighters Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters with Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue and South Whidbey Fire/EMS were called to a house fire near Smuggler’s Cove Road, close to Lagoon Point, just before 3 p.m. Wednesday. Shortly after crews arrived, the home exploded.

“The firefighters [injured] are not yet being identified, but they are from Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue, and South Whidbey Fire/EMS,” Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue stated. “The injured include two chiefs and one firefighter.”

Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue additionally reported that two civilians may also have been hurt, but they took themselves to the hospital without assistance before emergency responders could evaluate them, so their injuries are unconfirmed, as of this reporting.

The explosion completely destroyed the house. A neighboring home was also destroyed, while a third house suffered damage from the blast.

“The cause of the blast is under investigation by Region 3 Arson Task Force and the ATF,” Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue added.
