Whatcom County health officials have been alerted to a recent cluster of whooping cough cases at Western Washington University (WWU).

A university spokesperson told KIRO 7 that there were three cases three weeks ago before spring break began, and all individuals were immediately treated with no hospitalizations.

WWU noted that there have been no additional cases stemming from the initial outbreak.

“All the cases were fairly confined in dormitory settings, and all the individuals were healthy and up to date. It was a little concerning, however, we still investigated and ensured that all of those who received either treatment or prophylaxis that they needed,” said Zachary Doobovsky, a public health nurse supervisor for Whatcom County Health and Community Services.

Whooping cough cases down significantly in Whatcom County from last year

Health officials have contacted dozens of students who were possibly exposed to the three infected individuals.

“We monitor the situation for up to 42 days after the last case, and for every case we have to try to identify contacts — that could be anyone who was around them in the previous three weeks,” Doobovsky said.

In Whatcom County, there have been some improvements in whooping cough cases compared to 2025. This year, there have been 20 cases, all confirmed and probable.

In 2025, Whatcom County had 128 cases of whooping cough.

Health officials noted that the primary concern is protecting especially vulnerable individuals.

“We’re really looking at the young and the old, those with immune-compromising conditions,” Doobovsky said. “Even if you are healthy, it’s important to be vaccinated and up to date so you’re protecting those vulnerable populations.”
