Woodland Park elephants continue trip to Oklahoma

After a detour to San Diego, Woodland Park Zoo’s elephants are back on the road and en route to the Oklahoma City Zoo.
The two Asian elephants, Chai and Bamboo left the San Diego Zoo May 11. They were rerouted to San Diego in April after poor weather prevented them from completing their journey to Oklahoma City.
“Meticulous planning has gone into this transport. With a window of favorable weather, expert transport staff available, and a new route coordinated, Chai and Bamboo are ready to move to their new home and family,” said Dr. Deborah Jensen, Woodland Park Zoo President and CEO.
The drive from California to Kansas is estimated to take 25-30 hours. This includes taking stops every three hours to check on the elephants, feed them and rest.
The Oklahoma City Zoo has a herd of five elephants. It is hoped that Chai and Bamboo will integrate into that herd.
