‘Light on substance’: Katie Wilson’s first State of the City speech draws praise for tone, questions on specific policies

Feb 18, 2026, 12:35 PM | Updated: Mar 2, 2026, 2:42 pm

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson delivered her State of the City address Tuesday, addressing challenges from gun violence to affordability to the upcoming World Cup and all the opportunities that come with hosting such an event.

But how specific was Wilson in proposing measures to address the city’s ongoing struggles?

“She made it very clear during her speech that she is discussing and considering actions on multiple issues across the city, but across the board, she offered few specifics and didn’t include a lot of proposals,” KIRO Newsradio reporter Luke Duecy said on “The Gee and Ursula Show.”

For example, when Wilson talked about the deaths of two Rainier Beach high school students and other recent shootings across the city, the solution she provided was that she and her team are discussing developing a plan to address the root cause of gun violence. More specifically, her office is considering legal action against chronic nuisance properties that she believes create dangerous conditions.

Regarding the city’s homeless crisis and encampments, Wilson promised to introduce legislation soon to expand the number of homeless shelter beds citywide, but has not yet provided a specific timeline.

“I mean, it was an inspiring speech, for sure. The mayor also touched on ICE and immigration enforcement, child care, affordability, and supporting small businesses,” Duecy said. “But even on that note, she announced during her speech on small businesses, she’s going to be working on or developing ways to cut red tape. But she announced applications are now open for the Back to Business Fund to help stores with security and vandalism issues. But that fund that she mentioned was created by former Mayor Bruce Harrell and former Council President Sarah Nelson. So again, not a lot of direct proposals from Katie Wilson just yet.”

“You’ve covered many State of the City speeches. How did this one differ?” KIRO host Ursula Reutin asked. “I mean, did you think that there was a lack of substance?”

“Yeah, inspiring speech. I think if you would put a Bruce Harrell speech next to this Katie Wilson speech, there were points in there that were inspiring,” Duecy answered. “She ended on a really high note, that this is your city, that we’re working together, that there’s a vision for this city to become a great city. That’s the differentiator, but when you dive into it, I mean, we’re not the only outlet reporting this. There are multiple outlets out there that are saying the same thing: Very light on substance, very light on policies.”
