Two new prosecutor positions will help Seattle crack down on sex trafficking and address gun possession by people considered a danger to themselves or others, City Attorney Erika Evans announced Wednesday.

Mayor Katie Wilson included funding for both positions in her current budget proposal.

One of the prosecutors in the Seattle City Attorney’s Office “will be cross-deputized with the KCPAO, which means this new prosecutor will be able to pursue both felony crimes and misdemeanor casework within the city,” according to a news release from the office.

The city attorney’s office normally can prosecute only misdemeanors.

“After years of experience prosecuting people who commit crimes in court, I know firsthand how hard it has been for Seattle to disrupt sex trafficking, disarm pimps, and impose real criminal consequences on offenders,” Evans said. “Public safety is a team effort where different agencies and offices play different roles. Normally the City Attorney’s role stops at misdemeanors, but these two new city prosecutor positions will mean we can also contribute to work normally handled at the felony level. It’s important to me for CAO to do our part to help take more guns off the street and increase capacity to prosecute sex traffickers.”

The other new position in the city attorney’s office is an extreme risk protection order prosecutor.

“That internal unit will in turn collaborate with KCPAO and the Regional Domestic Violence Firearms Enforcement Unit which has worked since 2018 to ensure court orders to surrender firearms are actually enforced,” according to the release.

Evans outlined the proposals in June.

“It is going to have a direct impact on getting violent traffickers off our streets,” she said at the time. “If you are out threatening violence in our community, we will use our ERPO prosecutor to take your gun away.”

“Every neighbor deserves to feel safe — walking home, raising their kids, building a life in this city,” Wilson said. “I prioritized funding these two new prosecutor positions in my proposed budget, despite a major general fund shortfall that forced tough decisions and tradeoffs. It’s important that we can act faster when someone is in danger and hold accountable those who prey on our most vulnerable neighbors. This is what it looks like when we take public safety seriously: not just words, but people on the ground doing the work.”

A public hearing on Wilson’s budget proposal was held on Tuesday.

Another is scheduled for Nov. 5.
