A 3-year-old boy and his baby doll are showing millions what it means to raise empathetic kids

A toddler is teaching the internet a lesson about empathy with a baby doll.

Parents, this is a reminder that kids are always watching, and sometimes they’re practicing for the future in the sweetest ways imaginable.

A three-year-old Pennsylvania boy named Sylas has become an internet sensation, not for a tantrum or a toddler prank, but for being an incredibly devoted dad to his baby doll, Ellie.

His mom, Mary, said it all started because Sylas wanted a baby sister. But since that wasn’t happening anytime soon, he picked out a baby doll instead and took the job very seriously.

Mary posted a video of Sylas feeding Ellie a bottle, carrying her everywhere, and proudly caring for her.

Mom responds to critics of son playing with baby doll: ‘He’s happy. That’s what matters’

More than four million people watched it in just a week.

Then came bath time.

“Bedtime was pushed back 30 minutes because Sylas insisted on bathing and feeding his baby when we got home from swim lessons,” Mary said.

What struck so many parents wasn’t just how adorable Sylas is — it’s what he’s learning.

Mary spoke with ABC’s Good Morning America.

“He’s learning so much more than just playing with a baby,” she said. “He learns a lot of self-help skills. He’s working on his own emotions and trying to communicate more, whether it’s to me or Ellie.”

And when some online questioned whether boys should play with dolls, Mary had a simple response.

“It’s a lot of good coming out from just a doll,” she said. “And apparently, I guess someone said dolls are for girls, but it’s much more than that. He’s my child, and he’s happy. So that’s what matters most to me, that he’s happy.”

The comments poured in, too.

One person wrote, “All I see is you raising a competent man.”

Another joked, “Excuse me, ma’am — that’s clearly his biological child!”

Whether it’s a toy kitchen, a toolbox, or a baby doll, experts have long said pretend play helps children build empathy, communication, and confidence.

And judging by the internet’s newest favorite toddler dad, little Ellie couldn’t be in better hands.
