September is here, and it’s bringing some big changes to our weather.
We’ve been stuck in a remarkably persistent stretch of summer, with every high temperature since July 16 reaching at least 70 degrees. That streak is about to end as a much more active weather pattern moves in this week.
Tuesday will still feel mostly like summer, but with increasing clouds and highs in the low to mid-70s. A few isolated showers or sprinkles are possible Tuesday night, but most of us stay dry.
The bigger changes arrive Tuesday night and Wednesday. A few showers could reach the coast Tuesday evening, with rain developing along the beaches Tuesday night before spreading inland Wednesday.
Some light showers are possible in the lowlands Wednesday morning, followed by steadier rain and periods of moderate to heavy rain Wednesday afternoon.
It won’t just be wetter — it will be much cooler and windier, too.
Inland areas, including Puget Sound, could see gusts of 20 to 30 mph Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night. Stronger gusts of 35 to 40 mph are possible along the coast, Admiralty Inlet and the northern islands, where a Wind Advisory is in effect.
Thunderstorm chances Wednesday will be mainly limited to the mountains late in the day.
Showers continue Thursday, with occasional heavier downpours and blustery conditions. A few isolated thunderstorms are possible in the lowlands, while the mountains have a better chance of seeing lightning.
Highs will only be in the 60s Wednesday and Thursday — our first time below 70° since mid-July.
Rainfall will add up, too. From Wednesday through Thursday, most of the Puget Sound region could pick up around one-half to three-quarters of an inch, with more than an inch likely along the coast and foothills.
Some parts of the Olympics could receive more than two inches.
We’ll keep an eye on burn scar areas for localized flooding concerns, while the rain reaching the Cascades and eastern slopes will provide some much-needed relief for firefighters.
The pattern settles down Friday and into the weekend. A few showers are possible, but overall the weekend looks more dry than wet, with partly to mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low 70s.
