An Edmonds mom frustrated by the endless string of snowbound days during the snowstorm of the past two weeks took her vexations to her piano — and ended up taking the internet by a whole new kind of storm.

Stephanie Nelson, a 2000 graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School, dreamt of being a singer in her 20s and even released an EP, but her musical aspirations took a backseat to family and work. She still manages to make musical videos for fun, however.

“I always do little videos for my friends,” she said. “I get bored at my house — I’m alone — and I put my daughter in the playroom and come up with something funny to post online.”

Over the past two weeks, as the snow trapped her at home, unable to go to work, and kept school cancelled for her 6-year-old daughter, Nelson felt that she was going stir-crazy.

A fan of last fall’s Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper film “A Star is Born,” Nelson decided to rewrite the lyrics to the film’s most popular song, “Shallow,” to describe being stuck inside for days on end.

Tell me something, snow / Aren’t you tired of keeping us indoors? / Or will you fall more? / Ain’t it hard keeping it so darn cold? / I’m losing my mind / If school’s cancelled again, I’ll find myself longing / For some space / Stuck in the house for like the millionth time.

I’m off the deep end, watch as I lose it / I’m trapped in my house again / And I’m out of coffee, and that’s terrifying / We’re far from the summer now / Trapped in my house, trapped in my house again / Trapped in my house, trapped in my house again / Trapped in my house, trapped in my house again / We’re far from the summer now.

Nelson uploaded the video of herself singing and accompanying herself on the piano to social media outlets, and it soon went viral. The Facebook video alone has been viewed over 17,000 times.

She stopped by the Dori Monson Show on Friday to sing her version of “Shallow” on-air. Since the studio has no piano, Nelson had to sing a’cappella, but she still hit every note.

Nelson shares not only a first name with Lady Gaga — whose real name is Stefani Germanotta — but also an impressive vocal range and quality. The two singers sound remarkably alike.

“Lady Gaga … it’s tough to replicate that, which is why I think everyone was so amazed by your video,” Dori said. “Doing Gaga, that’s tough.”

Dori said the performance “brought tears to [his] eyes,” and called Nelson’s voice beautiful.

“Now you’re singing to the biggest audience in radio,” he laughed. “So today you finally made it.”
