Five ways to prepare your home for Halloween

Will all the pirates and princesses be able to make their way to your door? Have you taken the time to check around your yard before the neighborhood kids invade?

Zillow offers these five quick and easy Halloween safety tips.

Clear the drive
Avoid an accidental “trick” by putting away any stray toys, garden tools or home improvement equipment. If possible, move big items such as bikes and cars into the garage for safe keeping.

Sweep up
Clear any leaves or sticks from the driveway, sidewalk and front porch. Also double-check to make sure pumpkins and holiday decor are placed to the side of all walkways. Little feet can be especially tender.

Walk the lawn
Kids aren’t exactly known for sticking to the rules. Don’t expect them to stick to walkways, either. Do a thorough once-over of front lawns. Be especially mindful of uneven ground and any sharp or protruding objects such as rocks, sprinkler heads or pot holes.

Check your lights
In many communities, a bright porch light indicates a Halloween-friendly home. Expecting visitors? Now’s the perfect time to replace any broken or burned-out bulbs. Going out for the night? Keep your porch light turned off.

Put away pets
For pets, doorbells and trick-or-treat screaming can cause excessive excitement or fear. Before kicking off Halloween celebrations, tuck any furry friends in a quiet spot.
