Is there a worse punishment than Nickelback?

Nov 30, 2016, 2:43 PM | Updated: 5:30 pm

A Canadian police agency is adding a little extra punishment to those caught driving drunk over the holidays — Nickelback.

That’s right. The band that once topped the charts in the early 2000s, and has since taken the title of “most-mocked band” away from U2, has now become the choice DUI deterrent for the Kensington Police Service on Prince Edward Island.

Why Macklemore’s “Drug Dealer” song is spot on

In a Facebook post, the police department laid out its logic. If a driver is “dumb enough to feel they can drink and drive,” and gets caught by one of their officers, their car ride to jail will be filled with the sounds of Nickelback’s 2001 “Silver Side Up” album. The post is accompanied with a photo of a cassette — that’s right, a cassette tape — of the album. And it’s still in good condition as it appears to be unopened.

“… we figure if you are foolish enough to get behind the wheel after drinking then a little Chad Kroeger and the boys is the perfect gift for you,” the post about Nickelback states.

It prompted a rather strong conversation on the Dori Monson Show about what songs deserve to be used as punishment. Is Nickelback too severe? Dori would use a Barbara Streisand version of “Jingle Bells.” Producer Nicole would use any song by Little Big Town. Show colleague Drew Barth would use “Spinning Wheel” by Blood Sweat & Tears.

As for this author, “The Reason” by Hoobastank — while in the same vein as Nickelback — is bound to make anyone consider the reason they are in the back seat of a police car.

What artist, or song, deserves to be used as punishment? Leave your nominations below in the comments.

After news of the Kensington Police Service’s Facebook post quickly spread across the internet, the department took down its Nickelback post Nov. 30.
