The corner of Broadway and East Madison Street will get a bit busier once construction is complete on a new luxury apartment building.

Construction on the 16-story Danforth building began recently at 1001 Broadway, after crews demolished the former three-story medical building and parking garage.

The new 160-foot-tall, 16-story building will add another 265 apartments to the city, according to city documents. But that’s not what could add both more foot and vehicle traffic to the area.

In addition to the apartments, there are plans for more than 40,000 feet of retail space. The Puget Sound Business Journal reports that space will be occupied by a Whole Foods.

The property is along the First Hill Streetcar line and sits near Seattle University and a block from Swedish Medical Center.

The developer isn’t ignoring what could become a parking issue, however. There are plans to add 358 parking spaces below the building. Parking will be divided among residents and shoppers.

The Danforth replaces a three-story medical building that has stood since the 1920s.

The Business Journal reports the Whole Foods will be open by 2018. It will be the fifth grocery store in the area and the fourth Whole Foods in Seattle.
