Apparently not even patriotism is safe from Seattle’s theft problems.
Ballard resident Andrew Wergeland-Rammage reached out to KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson to tell him about a large American flag stolen from his pickup truck. The flag was mounted on a nearly 7-foot-tall pole, which Wegeland-Rammage says was destroyed during the theft.

“To me, someone went out of their personal way to physically damage and steal an American flag that I fly in respect of things I love and care for,” he said. “I would have accepted the fact if my windows would have been smashed, my tires would have been slashed — I don’t care, those things can be replaced easily. But to physically take an American flag off my truck and the pole itself – there is no moral standpoint as to why someone would do that.”
Wergeland-Rammage says he flies the flag because his best friend serves in the Marines and his grandmother served in the reserves.
“I fly it to honor our veterans and I fly it because I’m patriotic and I love my country,” he said. “It’s heartbreaking when you don’t see your flag on your truck anymore and you’re like, ‘Who in their right mind would steal an American flag?’”
While Wergeland-Rammage took the theft as an affront to the country, Dori was surprised that Wergeland-Rammage didn’t expect this to happen considering the rampant theft reports throughout the city. Dori said the sad reality is that nothing is safe.
“Did you think there would be some cloak of invincibility around the flag that would make it impervious to being stolen?” Dori asked.
To which Wergeland-Rammage responded: “Honestly, yeah.”
