Kshama Sawant to sell her years-overdue book on Amazon

Councilmember Kshama Sawant has made no secret of her disdain for Amazon, a company she blames for issues the council has helped cause, and their CEO Jeff Bezos, who she calls a “bully” and accuses of using extortionary tactics to fight the Amazon head tax. Indeed, she wants them prosecuted, though the legal claim has been ripped as “irresponsible” and “ludicrous.”

Yet, Sawant’s forthcoming (and very overdue) book is up for pre-sale on Amazon. Even more ironic, she’s selling the book in the Kindle edition, which is exclusive technology to Amazon.

To be published by Verso, “American Socialist” is the “inspiring” story of “…how Sawant toppled a sixteen year incumbent who was backed by a powerful Democratic Party establishment and reshaped Seattle’s political culture around demands for economic and social justice, reviving national debate around municipal socialism in the process.”

Irony aside, the book is overdue. When will it be published? The goal was 2015, but it’s not expected this year.

“We don’t know the actual date yet,” said a member of the Verso team, saying the whole project has been a “moving target.”

“We’re excited to publish it, but it’s been put on hold,” she told me.

Why is it so late? “No reason given; It’s due,” by Sawant, I was told.

The staffer first said they didn’t get the manuscript, but then said they’ve received several versions. It seems like it’s nowhere near ready for publishing, with a September 2019 date given as a hopeful date.
