Work resumes at the site of fatal Bonney Lake accident

Crews are expected to resume work Monday at the Bonney Lake construction site where a family of three died in April.
Work on the State Route 410 sidewalk extension project near Angeline Road is underway, according to the City of Bonney Lake. The site is where a concrete barrier fell off the highway bridge and crushed the Ellis family as they passed under it in their truck.
Construction will be done on the approaches up to the bridge. Work on the bridge itself will not begin for several weeks, according to the city.
The city and consultant WHH Nisqually removed the subcontractors involved in the April 13 fatalities. Contractors did not have the proper equipment to remove the concrete barrier, according to a police report release May 1.
Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson told KIRO Radio that the bridge demolition plan was not being followed at the time of the incident.
“Nowhere in those meetings did they say we’re starting demolition,” Johnson told KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson. “They did not have anything in place for safety…”
According to the report, there were several safety precautions missing from the site that led to the death of Josh, Vanessa and their child, Hudson. A machine used to grab concrete before it fell was not used at the time of the incident. Crews in charge of stopping traffic during bridge work never got the signal to do so at the time of the incident, according to the police report.
