A startling image of a father and child has sparked the immigration debate nationwide. (Photo by Scott Eisen/Getty Images)

It came up during the Democrats debate: The picture of the father and daughter lying face down on the banks of the Rio Grande, showing Oscar Martinez and his two-year-old daughter Valeria.

Ross: Let’s make a deal on health care and immigration

It should “piss us off” said Julio Castro. Then, the candidates debated about changing laws and who to blame and how America was divided.

But are we really divided over that image? When you look at it – what do you see?

You see love, right?

You see what you or I or any devoted parent would do for their child.

You see a fallen hero.

What you don’t see is a rapist,  or a criminal, or a gang member.

I hope that if nothing else, even if this doesn’t move members of Congress or the President to do anything, it will at least repair the unfair stereotype that’s been planted about the people who come here illegally.

Trump’s mass immigrant round-up has already gone awry

A lot of them are much braver than you and I will ever have to be, and a lot of them put family above everything.

How many times have you heard that most of this nation’s problems could be solved if there were more intact families? I hear it all the time from listeners.

“Dave, if more people had family values? You wouldn’t see homelessness, drug addiction,” and on and on.

Well, here are people so committed to family values they’re ready to give their lives. Why would we just shoo them away?
