One person is dead after a car went off the overpass onto the freeway near Interurban in Tukwila.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson confirmed the fatal collision. According to KIRO 7, the person was ejected from their car before it flew off the overpass.

“There was an individual on the ramp that was ejected out of the same SUV. That SUV came off the overpass landed on I-5 and three other vehicles became involved in the collision,” WSP Trooper Rick Johnson said. “This is not a common occurrence. I’ve been doing this 34 years, and I can’t remember a vehicle ever coming off of this overpass.”

The ejected driver has been placed in custody for felony hit and run after Trooper Johnson said he fled the scene. He was caught minutes later.

“Once medically cleared he will be booked into jail,” Trooper Johnson posted on X.

Puget Sound Fire reported one person died at the scene, four others were injured and one seriously.

The Washington State Department of Transportation stated the four left lanes on I-5 north are blocked, as is the overpass ramp from I-5 north to State Route 599 (SR 599).

“There are three other vehicles that were involved that were on NB I-5 when the vehicle came off the overpass. No serious injuries in those vehicles. The left 3 lanes will be blocked for an extended period of time. Only one lane open,” Trooper Johnson explained.
